Hard Times Tokens
Hard Times tokens were privately minted tokens. Made mostly out of copper from 1832 to as late as 1844 It should be noted that the actual financial crisis that occurred during this “Hard Times”, did not take place until 1837. Basically, most of the tokens from this period can be classified as political or satire type issues. Many incorporated commentaries on political figures such as Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, William Seward, or Daniel Webster. Merchant Tokens or Store Cards featured advertisements. This is an exciting field of Exonomia, and can provide endless hours of research and discovery.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. I recommend The Standard Catalogue of United States Tokens by Russell Rulau or the Guide Book of Hard Times Tokens, available on Amazon. I also hope you take advantage of our offerings of historic Auction Catalogues and eBook Downloads for sale.
Enjoy!
