Fractional Currency, is a term used by to identify a fractional note with a face value of less than one dollar. During the Civil War, coins were very scarce because of hoarding. Coins were so scarce that merchants couldn’t make change for their customers. Dating 1862 to 1876, the US Government issued Fractional Currency in: 3, 5, 10, 15, 25 and 50 cent denominations.
