German Notgeld
Beginning with World War I, Germany began to run short on its money supply. As people began hoarding hard currency and metal, commerce was becoming difficult. This was not unlike our own American shortages of money supply like the Panic of 1837 and the resultant Hard Times Token, or the Civil War and the creation of the Civil War Token – (both of which are available on my site, please check it out).
The word NOTGELD is interesting – NOT translates as “emergency” or “necessity” and GELD as “money”.
These WWI era notes were printed by local towns, villages, and municipalities and feature some of the most colorful and interesting notes ever produced.
They are inexpensive, historic, and beautiful! Not to mention, culturally significant.
